Fleet Risk Control
20 deaths per week through driving at work

Remember...

A policy MUST BE WRITTEN if a company or organisation employs more than 5 people and within this policy reference should be made to driving on the road.

Work related road safety or occupational road risks policy

The most appropriate starting point for any loss control programme in respect of driving would be to assess the risks involved in the use of vehicles on the road and then to prepare a vehicle safety policy that details how your company or organisation will address those risks, setting out the company/organisations direction, its general objectives and how they will be achieved. It is from this document that other documents that will be disseminated to drivers such as handbooks will be derived.

A formal policy will also promote sound health and safety driving practices by implementing clear and conscise rules and procedures amongst employees

Don't forget...

Besides covering acknowledged health and safety issues the Work related road safety or occupational road risks policy should make it quite clear that the companies' general policy is to: ensure competence of staff to drive safely whenever required to operate vehicles as part of their role within the company or organisation and to strive for continuous improvement in occupational road safety performance.

Details:

Besides covering acknowledged health and safety issues the safety policy should make it quite clear that the companies' general policy is to ensure the competence of staff to drive safely whenever they are required to operate vehicles as part of their role within your company or organisation.

The policy should also clarify the individual roles and responsibilities throughout your company or organisation, from the senior management through supervisors to individual drivers, making it clear the standard of behaviour expected.

It is also important that a policy statement summarising the safety direction and general objectives be communicated to ALL employees. This is usually most effectively done within the documentation such as driver handbooks or company rules provided to drivers. And when writing the policy, don't forget that some issues may cross over into issues with regards to contracts of employment.
